Waves is an American drama that follows the journey of a suburban African-American family - led by a well-intentioned but domineering father - as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss.

Themes

Themes include bereavement and terminal cancer, including vision of a dying man coughing up blood. Images of aborted foetuses are also briefly seen on posters at an anti-abortion protest.

Violence

A teenager strikes and accidentally kills his girlfriend during an argument.

Sex

The film features a sex scene in which the couple are covered by sheets and a scene in which the sounds of an apparently pornographic film are heard as a teenager appears to masturbate.

Language

The film includes frequent and occasionally aggressive use of the words “f**k” and “motherf**ker” in addition to use of the words “bitch”, “pussy”, “dick”, “shit” and “asshole”.

Drug use

People are shown using drugs including opioid pain-killers, marijuana and ecstasy.

Nudity

There is a brief view of a man’s buttocks in a locker room scene.
