Nitram is an Australian drama inspired by the events of the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. Nitram lives with his parents until he meets an eccentric and reclusive heiress, Helen, and moves into her house. After tragedy strikes, Nitram descends into an increasingly troubled state and begins to accumulate a cache of firearms.

Themes

This film focuses on a disturbed young man who is described as being intellectually challenged and is medicated due to mental health issues. As the film progresses, his mental state deteriorates and the sense of menace in his actions increases in intensity. The film also contains a fatal car accident and an implied suicide.

Violence

The film contains a scene where a character beats his father repeatedly around the body and head with his fists. While the film focuses heavily on the purchase and use of firearms and includes an implied, off-screen shooting, there is no depiction of the massacre.
