Nightmare Alley is a dramatic film set in Depression-era America. After spending time working in a carnival, a man named Stan Carlisle uses the skills he has learned to become a successful mentalist. His ensuing involvement with an enigmatic psychiatrist leads to a series of cons that have increasingly dark consequences.

Themes

The film centres on the dark world of an early 20th century carnival, and includes a collection of preserved, deformed fetuses and a man who bites the head off live chickens. The film focuses on criminal behaviour and blackmail and also includes the depiction of a murder-suicide.

Violence
