Lingui is a drama film which follows the story of Amina, who lives with her teenage daughter, Maria, on the outskirts of N’djamena in Chad. Her already fragile world collapses the day she discovers that her daughter is pregnant, and does not want to keep the baby. In a country where abortion is not only condemned by religion, but also by law, Amina is met with a number of hurdles while she tries to support her daughter. The film is in French with English subtitles.

Themes

The film contains themes, relating to suicide, abortion, rape and poverty that are mostly implicit in nature. In one scene, a female wades into a river and attempts to drown herself. She is immediately rescued and appears unharmed.
